Statement by Cllr Sue Prochak MBE, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Group on Rother District Council, in response to the ‘Zionism is racism’ motion recently passed at the Green Party conference

We are deeply concerned by the motion passed by the Green Party at their conference, and know that many Jewish people here in Rother will be left feeling less safe now than they did before as a result. It is a divisive motion that plays politics with such a sensitive issue. It also actively undermines a two-state solution that has the best chance of bringing a lasting peace in Israel and Palestine.

As Liberal Democrats, we strongly disagree with its statement that Zionism is racism. The Liberal Democrats have proudly led the way in Parliament towards a two-state solution by calling for the recognition of Palestine, full accountability for war crimes, ending arms sales and pushing for sanctions on the illegal settlers in the West Bank.

The Liberal Democrats have a long tradition of opposing racism and defending human rights. These principles must apply equally and consistently to both Israelis and Palestinians.
